30.05.2007 - FIS confirms
bidding rules for 2012/2013 FIS World Championships
Following the
receipt of a record number of applications for the organization of FIS
World Championships in 2012 and 2013, an orientation meeting with all
the Candidates took place on Friday 25th May 2007. Taking advantage of
the FIS Calendar Conference and the spring meetings of the FIS Technical
Committees currently underway in Portoroz (SLO), FIS representatives
convened all the Candidates to clarify the procedures and rules for the
candidature process.
As a first
step, the Candidates have been tasked with providing answers to a
detailed, discipline-specific questionnaire including the areas of
sports organization, accommodation, transportation, other services,
marketing and promotion as well as the environment. Following the
submission of the Candidates' responses, a FIS Inspection Group will
visit each Candidate venue for the Alpine and Nordic events during the
months of August and September 2007. Consisting of FIS officials, sports
professionals, representatives of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU),
the television and marketing rights holders for the Alpine and Nordic
events and its marketing partner, as well as other experts, the FIS
Inspection Group's task is to review the proposed event concepts while
acting as an advisory body to ensure the feasibility of the concepts'
implementation. For the Ski Flying, Freestyle and Snowboard events,
inspections will take place during the autumn/winter seasons.
The FIS
Inspection Group will compile a report that will be submitted to the FIS
Council, FIS Technical Committees and National Ski Associations in April
2008, after each Candidate has had the opportunity to review its own
section beforehand. Each Candidate will make a final presentation to the
FIS Council during the 46th International Ski Congress in Cape Town
(RSA), as well as the respective Technical Committees during their
meetings. They will also be able to present their candidatures to the
extended FIS family and discuss their plans at special exhibition stands
at the FIS Congress venue. The selection of the organizers will be made
by the FIS Council on May 29th, 2008.
According to
the procedures that were agreed to by all Candidates, communication
about the candidacy will be through the distribution of written
informational material and use of electronic communications. There will
be no presentations to the FIS committees by the Candidates until the
meetings during the FIS Congress in Cape Town. Measures have been
implemented to limit the expenditure on the candidacies with clear rules
that have been detailed by the FIS Council in the Annex I to the Rules
for the Organization of FIS World Championships.
“We are very
pleased about the interest by a large number of National Ski
Associations in the organization of FIS World Championships. Following
the very successful 2007 championships, this further enhances the value
of our flagship events amongst the most important winter sports events,”
commented FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis during the meeting with the
Candidates. “At the same time, whilst we know that the bids to host the
FIS World Championships offer candidate cities exceptional opportunities
to promote their image and enthusiasm for the ski sports throughout the
world, we feel very strongly about controlling the expenditure on the
candidatures. We much prefer that money be spent in the promotion and
development of the sport!” she added.
By the May
1st, 2007 deadline, applications were received from 12 candidates,
divided as follows:
• Two
applications for 2012 FIS Ski Flying World Championships submitted by
Harrachov (CZE) and Vikersund (NOR)
